Origami Shield

Single Component COVID-19 Mask Design

This is a one piece face shield folded out of any rigid plastic. Only 4 folds are necessary to create the shield, with an optional crease in the center bottom. The folded shield is comfortable, lightweight, and sanitary with no difficult to clean crevices.

Use a standard hole punch for head strap attachment points. Use double knotted bungee cord or normal string plus an adjustment clasp to create head strap. If you don’t have access to a clasp, punch the optional second hole in one side to make an adjustment cleat. The flexibility in the plastic will keep the shield comfortable and in place but it will need to be removed from the face to be adjusted if you do not have the clasp.

The shield in photos is made from .5mm Lexan, but thinner plastics will work.

If you don’t have access to a CNC you can easily cut the pattern by hand with scissors, high precision is not necessary to get the required finished shape. Folding time with a pattern cut off a CNC router is ~5min for a novice and ~2min once you have experience. Time to scribe the pattern, cut by hand, and fold is ~15min. Nested yield is 28 per 4’x8’ sheet with a material efficiency of 87%

The current sizing has worked for everyone who has tried the shield so far, but please reach out if you need a larger or smaller pattern.
